About this work
A muscular nude man grips the bridle of a large horse that rears up with a mounted rider on its back, the group set on a low pedestal. Below and to the right, a smaller horse or colt stands calmly on its own base, apart from the straining pair. The composition is dominated by the diagonal thrust of the rearing horse's body set against a churning sky.
Dense, swirling hatching fills the background with storm-like clouds and scattered star-like flecks, while the figures and horses are modeled in bold contrasts of solid black and bare paper to suggest bronze or stone.
